Re: Mackiev Data Breach

All good questions!  Rather than give a lengthy list of advice, though, I'm going to link to an article that explains things very well.  Yes, this link is legitimate!

https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-important-email-security-tips-you-should-know-about/

Kind of ironic that I'm providing a link to advice that tells you to not click on a link, isn't it?

Dave

Thanks Dave for the warning.  A quick refresher...how to you recommend that I screen a phishing email?  My usual system ...first if it looks bad I send it to spam.   The next step, I check the sender's email and if it looks fishy I send it to spam.  What should I do?  Thanks for the update,   Carol

Thought you all should be aware of a data breach that occurred at Mackiev software.  This article says about 60,000 users might be affected.  It also looks to me, though, that very little might have been compromised that wasn't already public information for the most part.
The article also doesn't make clear whether it's only Family Tree Maker users that were affected, or if it includes users of Mackiev's several other products.  My internal meter rates any threats as on the border of low and medium.  Nevertheless, be especially alert for phishing emails purporting to come from Mackiev in the near future.

April FTM Meeting Cancelled

genealogydave@...

For the benefit of those of you who may not be on the society's general list, all SKCGS meetings and functions have been cancelled for the time being.  In addition, the library has cancelled all meeting room reservations through April so obviously we will not meet.

We'll keep you all updated as things develop.  In the meantime, remember that pretty soon I'm going to abandon the individual emails and send only through the groups.io address, so if you haven't signed up to receive that one please do so.  If you need help just let me know.

FTM Users Group Meeting Cancelled

genealogydave@...

Due to concerns surrounding the current health scare, this month's meeting has been cancelled.  We'll plan to meet again in April.

A couple important topics in this message.  First, our monthly meeting will be this Saturday, 7 March, usual time and place (10:15am, Auburn Library quiet area).  If you have questions to discuss and haven't yet sent them to Winona be sure to do so today or tomorrow so she has time to research them if needed.  I won't be there, myself -- not during tax season! -- but will see you again in May.

Second, by now you should have received an invitation to join the ftmug@skcgs.groups.io mailing list.  Only 11 of you have joined but I don't have the access rights to see who you are.  This month and next I'm sending this message the old way and via the list, so if you get two copies that's why.  After that, though, I will use only the groups.io list so if you want to keep getting these notices and haven't signed up please do so!  If you didnt get the invitation, or need help joining the list, let me know and I can help you with it.

Have a great meeting!

Dave
